Since there seems to be no end in sight of this pandemic sh*t, we might as well make the most of it right? That's what I decided to do when my study abroad trip was cancelled. As annoying and sad as it was, it did not stop me from doing something with the time I had off. I could have stayed home and worked, I could have gone home home for the rest of the summer, but that wasn't enough for me. This was my chance to do something I've always wanted to do.
I already had the time off, I was too late to register for anymore classes, so why wouldn't I take advantage of this time. So I contacted my brother in Reno, NV and asked him what he thought of me coming to see him for basically the rest of my summer. He was as excited as I was and happily agreed to me coming up there. However, because I was going to be there for an entire month with no work and no school, I needed to make the most out of my time there.
If you know anything about me, you know that I want to go to grad school, Physical Therapy school to be exact. This requires me to get a certain amount of shadowing hours before I can apply. And since the pandemic regulations were beginning to ease up, I decided to try and get a shadowing schedule for while I was going to be there. I was all excited because the first 3 phone calls I made gave me a yes and I was on my way to get a ton of the hours I need. But as time went on, two out of three of those experiences changed their minds because the pandemic was on the rise again. However, I stuck with the one that kept me on and I loved it and managed to get another shadowing experience out of that! Overall I got almost half of my hours done!
The other thing I decided to do while I was there was something that I have been waiting to do. My golden retriever is a certified therapy dog which means that she can volunteer at hospitals and such. However, i can't take her because I am not her certified handler. So I signed up for the course to get certified, got certified, and now I just have to take the eval with her!
On top of these two things, I also managed to study for the GRE with my brother as well as come up with a plan to pay off some of my loans, make some extra money, and get a student credit card to start building my credit score for future endeavors!
Despite the fact that my abroad trip was cancelled and I couldn't register for anymore classes, I feel as though my life is as much put together as it has ever been. I feel like this month gave me the time to set myself up for success, in school and life in general. I'm sad that I'm leaving but having set myself up for these things, I feel prepared to go back to school and my regular life.
This pandemic may have turned my world upside down but I'm not going to let it stand in my way. I believe I really have made the most out of it and I plan to continue doing just that!
